There are numerous medications used to treat diabetes. Insulin often springs to mind but is used less commonly to treat Type 2 diabetes.
Metformin is one of the most common medicines used to treat Type 2 Diabetes. It works by lowering blood sugar levels but does not stimulate insulin secretion and so, when given alone, does not cause hypoglycaemia. Some people taking metformin suffer from side effects like diarrhoea, nausea, loss of appetite or stomach aches. These side effects are more common in the early days of treatment although they can persist.
